October is Respect Life Month. This year, given the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to be aware of and consider: the elderly, disabled and/or shut-in neighbors who need assistance. Remember that depression, suicide and abuse are all possible in this environment of lock-downs and minimal social interaction, particularly among those most at risk—the elderly—not to mention the inability to attend Mass and/or receive the Sacraments frequently.
What can you do to help? Some examples of possible assistance are:
- Rides to appointments
- Grocery shopping and/or picking up medications
- ’Social distancing’ in-person visits, if feasible
- Picking up mail, or mailing packages
Add your own ideas…or just ask what is needed. Remember too, a simple phone call from time to time is also a convenient way to stay connected and lift someone’s spirits, whether it’s a neighbor or family member.
Let’s make this year’s October Respect Life month successful!
